Based on the bestselling fantasy novel by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There And Back Again are the long-awaited prequels to the Oscar-winning The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Also directed by Jackson, the film series had banked $2.91 billion at the box office by the time the final instalment was released in 2003.

Jackson took to his Facebook page to proclaim his delight on completion of filming: "We made it! Shoot day 266 and the end of principal photography on The Hobbit. Thanks to our fantastic cast and crew for getting us this far, and to all of you for your support! Next stop, the cutting room."
